IOM holds Migration Summit
The International Organisation of Migration (IOM)Summit was held last
week in Geneva, Switzerland.
Chairman of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Amal
Senadhilankara and Additional Manager of International Affairs K.O.D.D.
Fernando participated in the summit.
The SLBFE Chairman said the issues discussed at the Summit included
protection and fundamental rights of Sri Lankan overseas workers and
whether in future they will have to face harassment from their employers
as many such complaints have already been made by many employees to the
International Organisation of Migration.
The SLBFE Chairman said the 2011 Geneva Summit suggested laws and
regulations regarding overseas workers which are in force at present.
According to the SLBFE Chairman, there are 1.5 million Sri Lankan
overseas workers of which 80 percent are employed in the Middle East.
