Flashback: West Indian opening batsman of the eighties Gordon
Greenidge set-up victory for his team in the Manchester cricket Test
against England in July 1984 with a fine double century - 223 which
helped his side to make 500 in the only innings they played against
England in the Test played between July 26, 27, 28, 30 and 31.
Greenidge's knock helped the West Indies in a big way to put England
under pressure and England were out for 280 in the first innings and
were shot out for 156 in the follow-on.
So, the West Indies won this Test by an innings and 64 runs. Gordon
Greenidge did not disappoint his skipper Clive Lloyd whose long-term
idea was to bat as long as possible on a pitch which was bound to pose
more problems on the penultimate days. Whenever he was beaten, whenever
he passed the milestone of another fifty, Greenidge simply put his head
down and continued to accumulate the runs, not so dramatically, but with
all the certainty of a professional player at the height of his powers.
Greenidge made almost a half the West Indian total of 500. On the
first day, Paul Allott rocked the West Indians by taking three quick
wickets. With the pressure lifted by those quick wickets and no
startling example for him to have to follow Dujon must have entered the
fray in a relaxed frame of mind.
Greenidge (223) and Dujon (101) were involved in a fine fifth-wicket
partnership of 197 runs that pulled the West Indians out of trouble - 70
for 4 wickets and brought up the score to 267 for 5 wickets.
Fine combination

W.W. Davis – fine batting for a No.11 batsman at the start
of his career. He made 77 in this Test coming in the middle
order.

The fine batting of the duo - that's Greenidge and Dujon shelved all
hopes of the England team making a complete breakthrough, but this fine
partnership helped the West Indians to get to safety. The England
bowling had begun to look ragged on the first evening but it was made to
look positively shoddy during the stand between Davis and Greenidge put
on 170 runs for the sixth wicket after that earlier partnership of 197
runs for the fifth wicket between Greenidge and Dujon. There was some
rain on the third day, but it spared England from the conflict for only
one hour on the third day and by the end of it defeat was coming up fast
along the once famous Manchester ship canal.
England started off well, with Fowler (38) and Broad (42) putting on
90 in their opening partnership. Then there was who made 100 not out and
stretched the England batting, but West Indies opening bowler Garner
bowled tight. Garner and Davis bowled tight to stop the flow of runs and
later on Baptiste tied the batsmen down. The England batsmen finally
crumbled and were all out for 280 in their first innings and were forced
to follow-on 220 runs behind on the first innings. Came the second
innings and things turned out to be worse for the English team and
besides David Gower who was 57 not out the other batsmen folded up
meekly and were all out for 156 runs in their follow-on.
By stumps on the fourth day it was only Gower who stood firm, but he
alone could not stop the debacle. Roger Harper - the spinner was the
most successful West Indian bowler in the second innings and he took 6
for 57.
