The Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation in
collaboration with the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia hosted
Graduates from Russian (Soviet) Universities on November 28-30, 2012 in
Moscow. Opening the Forum in the premises of the Hall of Columns,
Minister of Education and Science Dr. Dmitry Livanov expressed his
gratitude to graduates for their high profess III World Forum of Foreign
sionalism in the respective fields and strengthening ties with Russia
over the years.
The three-day event gathered more than 800 delegates from 170
countries. Highly skilled specialists, scientists, military leaders,
high-ranked officials and even cosmonauts, they all became members of
the Forum. The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and
the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov sent their kind greetings
to all the participants. The agenda of the Forum envisaged plenary and
sections meetings aimed to facilitate establishment of voluntary alumni
associations of Russian (Soviet) universities in native countries of
foreign graduates, to contribute ideas and resources through social and
multicultural interactions to large-scale projects worldwide as well as
to discuss the prospects and role of the Russian language and education.
A Sri Lankan delegation of 10 members was led by Dr. Saman
Weerasinghe, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka - Russia Friendship
Society and Advisor to the President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Addressing the
event, Dr. Weerasinghe extended his sincere appreciation to the
Organising Committee, the Ministry of Education and Science of the
Russian Federation and to all the participants for their efforts
promoting sustainability and coherence in organisation of World Forums
of Foreign Graduates held in 2003, 2007 and 2012. He noticed that Sri
Lanka has made many successful achievements thanks to the great
assistance of the Russian states, especially in the field of preparation
of national qualified cadres. The prominent role in this process belongs
to Sri Lankan graduates from Russian (Soviet) universities achieved high
statues in intellectual elite of the country, whether it is economy,
politics, medicine, science and technology or any other sector. Among
them are outstanding healthcare professionals and managers of the
largest medical centres of the country, lecturers and teachers,
engineers and irrigators, entrepreneurs and diplomats, artists and
religious leaders. Dr. Weerasinghe provided a shining example of
fruitful bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Russia that are
thriving day by day image.
