By A.C.De Silva

Garfield Sobers... took 2 for 48 in India’s first-innings
total of 197 and took 3 for 116 in India’s 2nd innings total
of 422.

FLASHBACK: This was the fourth Test match that India played against
the West Indies in April 1962 at Port of Spain and the West Indies went
on to win the match by 7 wickets. The winning hit came off the bat of
Seymour Nurse who straight drove Indian left-arm bowler Salim Durrani
for a boundary.

Rohan Kanhai – a rampant innings of 139 in the first innings
for West Indies in a total of 444 for 9 wkts dec.
|

Wesley Hall 5 for 20 in India’s first innings total of 197
and 1 for 74 in India’s 2nd innings total of 422. He made a
fine 50 not out in West Indies total of 444 for 9 wickets in
the first innings. |

Lance Gibbs... took 4 for 112 in 56. 1 overs in India’s
second innings total of 422.
|

Rodriguez... scored 50 in West Indies first innings total of
444 for 9 wickets declared and took 3 for 51 in India’s
first innings total of 197. |
The hit brought the overall scores of the match to West Indies 444
for 9 wickets declared and 176 for 3 wickets; India 197 and 422.
It was a conclusive West Indies victory – fourth in-a-row on the
tour, but the entire game belonged to a veteran from Bombay named Polly
Umrigar.
It was a fantastic match from the first day, when Frank Worrell, who
won the toss and decided to bat, called on his openers Conrad Hunte and
Easton McMorris to play sensible cricket to the final stages, when “Big
Polly,” though suffering from strained muscles, came out of the pavilion
in a last courages effort to snatch a miracle from out of the air for
his team.
But Umrigar had done more than enough some of the Indians had done
too little; there was no turning back the West Indies now. For, Hunte and
McMorris gave their team a splendid start, raising 93 for the first
wicket in the second innings, and when the rampant Kanhai came in, he
hit 139, shared in a second wicket stand with.
McMorris (50) worth 119 runs; and, despite some fine bowling and
fielding by the Indians, West Indies closed the first day’s play at 268
for 6 wickets, a tally which pleased both sides.
Hall punishes Indians
India felt justified about their performance. However, West Indies
were still armed with run-scoring batsmen, including Worrell, Rodrigues
and Gibbs. It was Hall however, who punished the Indians most on the
next day. With nine wickets down, Pataudi’s men swung into a frame of
mind that suggested preparations in the pavilion in reply to West Indies
total of less than 350. But Worrell, with the mighty Hall as his last
partner, drove with power against the tired Indians and made a lot of
runs, Worrell decided to close the West Indies first innings with the
total at 444 for 9 wickets.

Polly Uminger hits one to leg – he made 172 not out in
India’s second innings total of 422 and earlier he made 56
in India’s first innings total of 197. |

Frank Worrell – 73 not out in total of 444 for 9 wkts dec.
in first innings.

The Indians batting had been dogged by their batsmen not scoring runs
in the early phase of the series there was still hope that it would
right itself, particularly in this game in which they packed 11
potential run-getters. But the runs never came and three wickets were
down for 9 runs. West Indian paceman Wesley Hall was the bowler who
seemed to trouble the Indian batsmen – Sardesai – the opener was bowled
at once for nought, Surti perished also without scoring and Manjrekar
too was out early for 4. From 3 wickets down for 9 runs, the position
became worse when Manjrekar played into Windies wicket-keeper Medonca’s
gloves off Hall with his score at 4 and India were 25 for 4 wickets.
Then it became 30 for 5 wickets when Mehra was strapped and bowled by
Hall for 14 with a slow ball. India were 61 for 5 at the close of play
that day.
Polly Imrigar and Nawab of Pataudi played calmly the next day, but
clever spin bowling by Rodriguez and Garfeild Sobers backed by splendid
fielding pulled the Indians down and the venom of Hall’s bowling brought
rich results and India folded up at 197 runs.
Worrell enforces follow-on
So, Worrell asked Pataudi to bat again, but this second innings of
India was vastly different than what they served up in the first
innings. There were two centurions for India in the second innings –
Polly Umrigar (172 not out) and lower down the order Salin Durrani
(104), together with Mehra (62) and India were able to get to 422 runs.
Umrigar’s century was the most fluent century seen at the Queen’s Park
Oval ground in a Test match for many years, and certainly the best hit
by an Indian player in the West Indies.
The West Indian heroes in India’s second innings were the spin
bowlers, Sobers and Hall; but they had some smart fielders to back them.
The score of 422 meant that the West Indians had to make 176 to win. The
Windies had all day on the following Monday and 61 minutes before close
of play on Saturday. Hunte (30) and McMorris (56) set about the task in
a way that suggested that they had the entire week for themselves. They
went about the business of making runs slowly and Seymor Nurse somewhat
quickened the pace and made 46. And West Indies finally made 176 runs
for 3 wickets to win the match comfortably.
