My favourite subject
I like science because I can learn a lot about the world.

I was weak in science when I was in grade 4. But now science has
become my favourite subject. I improved my knowledge by browsing the
Internet and learning the facts about science lessons I do in school.
I like to learn more about animals and other living beings. When I am
free, I search and learn a lot of facts about living beings.
Learning about flowers and plants and how they grow are some
questions that come to my mind.
I also like to learn about scientists. To be a doctor, I have to
learn more about the human body. I should have a good knowledge of
science to achieve my goal.
I do my studies with great interest. To become a doctor, I need to do
mathematics too. It is an easy subject. My mother teaches me
mathematics. I score high marks for it.
I love science and mathematics. My future ambition is to become a
doctor.

The importance of having good friends

“A friend in need is a friend indeed” is a golden proverb about
friends.
From birth until death we have thousands of friends around us. When
we are with friends, we are happy.
A friendship is a bond between two people. For friendship, age,
caste, status, gender or career is immaterial. Friends share their
feelings such as happiness, sadness and affection. Friends should be
loyal to each other.
Friendship is a bond which benefits all of us. It brightens our life.
By associating with friends we can learn many things. A bad person can
be made good with the help of a friend. Loyal friends are an asset.
Many poets, novelists, lyricists have written about friendship.
A healthy friendship uplifts the standard of our lives. So, build a
friendship with others.

The solar system
The
solar system in the milky way consists of eight planets. It has one Sun.
The Sun is one of the smallest stars in the universe. The planets in
the solar system are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus and Neptune.
Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system. The planet Venus
can be sometimes seen in the evening sky.
Earth is the only planet with living beings. Mars has the largest
snow mountain.
Jupiter is the largest planet. The famous ‘Big Red Spot’ believed to
be the place where an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) crashed on the
planet.
Saturn has visible dust rings, though Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune
have dust rings which are invisible to the naked eye.All the planets
revolve round the sun in an elliptical path. The closer the planet the
faster it can revolve. There are moons for some planets.
The planet Earth has one moon. Jupiter has fifty-six moons. Saturn
has sixty-two moons.
There are black holes in the solar system. A planet that is near one
of those, can easily be dragged inside at any time. Then, the planet
will disappear. The solar system is an amazing place.

The Kandy perahera
The Kandy perahera is held in August. The procession is held for a
number of days. Lot of people come to see the perahera. It is very
colourful and beautiful.
Many
elephants parade in the procession. They are dressed in beautiful
clothes in different designs and colours. They are followed by
colourfully dressed dancers, drummers, tom-tom beaters, flag bearers and
stilt walkers. The torch bearers illuminate the procession. The Kandy
perahera is a religious festival. The Buddha's Sacred Tooth Relic is
taken in the procession.
The place where the Sacred Tooth Relic is kept is called the Dalada
Maligawa. Diyawadana Nilame is the guardian of the Dalada Maligawa and
he is an important person in the procession. The procession of the four
devalas Vishnu, Natha, Kataragama and Paththini join the Kandy perahera.
Every year the Sacred Tooth Relic is taken out for the perahera. The
Maligawa tusker carries the beautifully decorated relic casket. He
kneels down and the casket is kept on his back. Then he walks very
majestically in the procession. People, young and old, gather in their
thousands to see the perahera.
