Rajitha Dissanayake's latest play Aadara Wasthuwa (Love Object) will
have its premiere at the Lionel Wendt theatre on August 2, 3 and 4 at
7.00 pm. The 90-minute drama seeks to question the notion of love; its
boundaries and politics, and the extent to which it determines our
behaviour when confronted by other overpowering conditions.
The central character is Naveen, a university lecturer who doubles as
a senior consultant to a government ministry. Naveen is drawn into a
plot to overthrow the ruling party by his friend Suresh, a cut-throat
media mogul. Madhavi, a former student of Naveen who writes for a
leading news magazine, comes to interview him.
Naveen and Madhavi had been lovers 10 years ago. During the course of
the interview Madhavi tries to elicit politically sensitive information
from Naveen. The subsequent revelation of who she really works for sets
in motion a chain of events with potentially grim consequences.
Rajitha Dissanayake ranks among the top original playwrights to
emerge in the last two decades and has produced well-known plays such as
Weeraya Merila, Sihina Horu Aran, Apahu Herenna Be and Bakamoona Veedi
Basi. His scripts focus on burning socio-political issues and have drawn
crowds, sparked debate, won awards and toured internationally.
The cast includes Shyam Fernando, Nadeeshani Peliarachchi, Gihan de
Chickera, and Nalin Lusena.
