Asian Youth Games ends with colourful ceremony

The second Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China ended on Saturday with
a colourful closing ceremony. Sri Lanka who are the host of the next
Games in Hambantota in 2017, had the honour of giving an eight minute
cultural display in which they performed traditional Sri Lankan dances
with 44 oriental dancers from the Police, Army, Navy and Air Force
taking part.

During the closing ceremony, the official youth Olympic Flag was
handed over to the Mayor of Hambantota Eraj Ravindra Fernando and
National Olympic Committee (NOC) President Hemasiri Fernando by the
Chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee Lu Fong.
Sri Lanka can be satisfied with their performance winning one silver
and five bronze medals. The silver was won by Akila Ravisanka who came
second in the 110m hurdles event in a time 13.99 seconds.
The bronze medals were by athletes Anuradha Vidusanka 110m hurdles.
Nimali Madushika women’s 400m and Dilhani Fernando in the women’s 800m
in addition to swimmer Matthew Abeysinghe who came third in the 100m
freestyle event and squash player Mihiliya Methsarani. Improving on the
2009 Games, in which they won only three medals.
The Mayor of Nanjing Yang Che speaking at the closing ceremony said
that China will extend their maximum support to Sri Lanka to conduct
2017 Hambantota Games successfully. And they will also brief them on how
to organize the 2017 Games on a grand scale. |
