One has to be extremely cautious when writing books to impress
children in their formative years. More so, when efforts are made to
cultivate values in them. Perhaps only those who are familiar with the
Children's mindset and are also fond of them could succeed in their
efforts.
Samanmalee Padmakumara's two books, Hapana Hawa and Hapana Rewatuna
have no doubt inspired children. The writer conjures up the image of the
legendary folklore Mahadenamutta's hitherto unheard better-half
Mahadenamittaniya and her five 'disciples', to the joy and excitement of
children.
What is Mahadenamittaniya's mental make-up? She is a kind-hearted,
but crafty woman who always acts with circumspection. The writer should
be credited for her attempt at bringing Mahadenamittaniya from
obscurity, perhaps, due presumably to the influence of the patriarchal
society, to the limelight. Folklore writers dwelt mainly on the
hilarious acts of court jester Andare's wife.
The writer has accorded due regard and respect for women who pilot
the family ship in turbulent waters Samanmalee's two books, Hapana Hawa
and Hapana Rewatuna takes children back to their childhood dreams.
Artist Sasanka Dassanayake's pictures in these books have infused
life into the writer's thoughts.
