Visha's 'Chalana 4' :
An exclusive dancing fiesta!
Senior students of Visha School of Dancing held a traditional
classical dancing concert at the Lionel Wendt Theatre recently.
Visha Manohari De Silva, the Choreographer, Educationist and the
great dancing 'Guru' had commenced pursuing her illustrious career in
dancing at the tender age of 12 as a student of Visakha Vidyalaya,
Colombo. Having completed her secondary education, she entered the
University of Kelaniya and obtained a Degree in Fine Arts.
Visha was guided by the internationally acclaimed the late
Chithrasena and Vajira. She was a permanent member of Chithrasena and
Vajira dance troupe which travelled widely throughout the world. She
commenced her career at Carey College, Colombo and later moved to
Musaeus College where she has nurtured hundreds of students. She is
currently the Dancing Instructor at Wycherly International School.Visha
is probably the only Sri Lankan Dancing Instructor holding a regional
directorial position at an Indian International School chain. She holds
this position at the prestigious Ryan International School with 120
branches throughout India and spends two months or more every year in
New Delhi training Indian students in traditional Sri Lankan
dancing.Visha and her dancing troupe travelled and performed in many
countries including Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Thailand, Hungary, The
United States of America, Malaysia, Taiwan, Maldives, Singapore and
India. Visha and her team performed at the Independence Day celebrations
last February in the United States under the patronage of the Embassy of
Sri Lanka in the United States. Taking over the legacy of the mother,
young, talented and gifted dancer Vindya, the daughter of Visha has
choreographed most of the exquisite performances in 'Chalana 4'.
Just as the mother, she is an old girl of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo.
She has completed her basic Degree in Dancing and the Master's Degree in
Theatre and Drama at the University of Kelaniya.
'Chalana 4' offered several novel contemporary innovations. The most
distinctive among them was an exclusive peacock dance with a blend of
Eastern dancing and a Western Ballet touch. In addition, a combination
of Kathak and contemporary dance performance named 'Saiya' was
spectacular. |
