Alpine turns 100
Alpine Hotel, Nuwara Eliya will celebrate its 100th year of
operations.
Chairman Mahinda Dodampegamage said that to mark the occasion,
construction work will commence shortly to add 32 deluxe guest rooms
with all modern facilities, but retain the 'old world charm' and the
colonial look of the hotel.
Dodampegamage who is concerned about the colonial structure of the
hotel, said that adding another 32 to the 30 rooms, will not change the
present design of the hotel. He said that more unemployed youth of
Nuwara Eliya will be offered employment at the hotel soon.
"Each day we light up the 100-year old chimney at the main lobby and
also in some of the guest rooms," he said. Dodampegamage said that the
hotel was built during the British era. The first owner was his
grandmother after which the hotel was vested with his mother, who gifted
it to him.
The pool table at the hotel is one of its kind inNuwara Eliya. A
novel feature of the hotel is that tourists are offered a eight-hour
'waterfall tour' which covers over 14 beautiful waterfalls in and around
Nuwara-Eliya.
"Some Sri Lankans too do not know that there are over 14 beautiful
waterfalls in and around Nuwara Eliya," he said.
This waterfall tour is a unique feature which is enjoyed not only by
foreign tourists, but Sri Lankans too.
Guests at Alpine Hotel get a panoramic view of the beautiful
