President to open school for prisoners

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will open the first ever school for prison inmates at Watareka on Friday 21.

Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera and Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena will take part in the ceremony.

The prison school was constructed at a cost of Rs. 19.2 million.

The school is equipped with a Mahindodaya Science laboratory, a language laboratory and a computer science laboratory for the benefit of the prison inmates.

The first batch consisting of 183 prison inmates will be enrolled to pursue educational activities according to the syllabi. They will be provided free school uniforms.

"The new school for prison inmates is a pledge is a pledge under the Mahinda Chinthana concept" said, Kurunegala Zonal Director of Education G. Weeratunga at a meeting of the Kurunegala District school principals in Bingiriya recently.
