Sleep and its benefits
It looks as if you are doing nothing at all. Your eyes are closed and
your muscles are relaxed. You breathe softly and it is called sleep.
Everyday at night we go to bed to sleep. We sleep seven or eight hours a
day. The bedroom should not be warmer than 20 degrees C to sleep. We
have to go to bed early so that we can get up early. If you go to bed
straight after watching a TV program you cannot sleep well.
Do you often feel tired during the day? We all dream every night.
Sometimes you wake up and remember your dreams. Not all dreams are
sweet.
Some children walk and talk when they are asleep. After a sound sleep
you can work happily and better. However, we should not sleep all the
time because it is not good for your health.

Development of science and technology
Science means promoting the logical thinking of humans and technology
means inventing new machines and equipment with the knowledge of science
to make the work easier. Science and technology drive man towards a
comfortable life.
In the past, many experiments were done in science. With the
invention of fire and wheel man made many more inventions. But in the
past man lived a very simple life.
The only source of energy for them was the sun. They loved nature
immensely. Therefore, nature protected them. The garments were made
using animal skin and man did not have a permanent shelter. In the past
technology was not developed very well.
At present modern scientists are developing new machines to do many
tasks.
With the development of science man is trying to control nature. This
has led to many problems. Today people live in permanent houses and use
luxurious items and fashion garments.

The private transport system
The private transport system was introduced to Sri Lanka a long time
ago. It has been quite a successful mode of transport in Sri Lanka.
At the beginning the rates were much higher than those of Sri Lanka
Transport Board (SLTB). Only the affluent people could afford to travel
in private coaches while the ordinary people could not do so. At present
the bus fares are almost equal and everyone can enjoy this facility.
The system has not been streamlined yet but it was a great blessing
when the railway and the SLTB service could not cope with the rush. The
private transport service has gradually improved. At present the fleet
has been increased and the service has improved in quality. But there is
room for improvement. The bus crew must be more courteous to commuters.
Overloading has caused many accidents and this must be stopped. Then
more people will travel and this system of transport will become very
popular.
The Intercity service has made travel quicker and more comfortable,
but there is room for improvement.

A picnic
It was a pleasant day. The sun was shining brightly. I asked my
father to take me to the “Nature Park” in Ja-ela. He agreed and we went
there on one Sunday morning. My father, mother, two cousins of mine and
myself went.
My mother packed some food and drinks. My father bought the tickets.
We saw colourful birds, animals and reptiles. There were huge shady
trees, flowering trees and trees trimmed in shapes.Everything looked
beautiful and clean.
We strolled about and then played. We ate the sandwiches which my
mother had made. After eating, we packed all the litter in a bag and
took them away. We relaxed a little. Then we played a little and got
ready to go home. We were tired but happy.

A day without water
We cannot think of a day without water but we can live without food
for a day. Water is a very valuable source. Some people say that in the
near future there will be a drought.
Water is important for us as it gives many advantages. We use water
for drinking, bathing, cooking, planting and to quench our thirst. So,
we should protect this valuable source.
Why is water decreasing nowadays? It is because people pollute the
water by throwing garbage into water resources. Some people cut trees.
We must take care of water and we should take immediate action to stop
water pollution.
