The National List parliamentarian who is also the Monitoring MP for
Mass Media and Information made this observation after opening an
election party office for Colombo District UFPA candidate Ajith
Subasinghe at Gothatuwa on Thursday.
The event was organised by Kotikawatte-Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha
Member Prince Gunasekera.
MP Azwer said that the UPFA and its main coalition partner the SLFP
has a rich history of providing opportunities to deserving and aspiring
youth to enter politics. "Ajith Subasinghe is a new face the UPFA has
introduced to politics from the Colombo district. He is no stranger to
politics as he has been associated with the SLFP for many years and has
been rendering an honorary service as coordinating secretary to a few
ministers. The UPFA has made the right decision by fielding him for the
forthcoming Western Provincial Council elections from the UPFA," the MP
said.
"He is a person with a proven track record of serving people. That is
why he has got the blessings of the leadership to contest the Provincial
Council elections. Ajith Subasinghe has been an ardent supporter of the
SLFP, spending a large volume of his personal funds for social services
and party activities. He deserves to be elected to the Western
Provincial Council," he said.
Parliamentarian Azwer said that Muslim community is living in peace
and harmony, showing their faith and gratitude to President Mahinda
Rajapaksa. "Not only the Muslims, but all other communities - the
Sinhalese, Tamils and Burghers live in perfect peace and harmony. It is
President Rajapaksa who brought us this peaceful environment after
giving that illustrious and inspiring leadership to the Security
Forces," he said.
The veteran Muslim leader said that the ruling UPFA would secure a
resounding victory at the forthcoming Western and Southern Provincial
Council elections. "The masses have reposed an implicit faith in
President Rajapaksa and his UPFA Government. He is the leader who has
protected our country. Hence, I have no doubt that the people would show
their gratitude by giving a landslide victory to the UPFA," the MP said.
UPFA's Colombo District candidate Ajith Subasinghe said that he is no
stranger to politics and has served the people by spending his personal
funds for many social projects.
"I have not come to politics to make a living. Serving people has
always been my passion. I have always reserved a considerable portion of
my business income towards charity. At that time I never had any idea of
contesting elections," he said. Subasinghe said the UPFA requested him
to contest the Provincial Council elections and he could not turn down
the party's request as a die-hard supporter of the SLFP. "I could not
say no to the party's call. I have never engaged in a battle for
preferential votes. My aim is to give a resounding victory to the party.
Let the voters decide on preferential votes," he
said.Kotikawatte-Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha Member Prince Gunasekera
said the UPFA has gone from strength to strength under the dynamic
leadership of President Rajapaksa. "The UPFA's victory at the Western
and Southern Provincial Council elections are crystal clear. That is as
sure as daylight. The masses are behind the leader who has ushered in
peace," Gunasekera said. |
