New Bureaus to check child abuse, harassments of women

The government will set up 25 child and Women's Bureaus at 25 selected police stations before the end of this year. Rs. 135 million has been allocated for this purpose.

This program is funded by the ministry of child development and Women's Affairs and special women's Bureaus would be set up in the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Monaragala, Batticaloa, Ampara Trincomalee, Jaffna, Mulativu, Killinochchi, Mannar, Kurunegala, Puttalam and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

The program will be carried out under the supervision of Child and Women's Bureau of the Police Department.

"We need to wipe out child abuses and all acts of harassments on women and innocent children.

Those who commit such brutal harassments would be dealt with severely punish in to come.

That is why we thought of introducing these Women's Bureaus islandwide to ensure safety of children and women", said the Minister of Child Development and Women's Affairs Tissa Karaliyadde at an interview with "Sunday Observer" recently.
