Financial aid to build toilets

The Water Supply and Drainage Ministry has conducted an islandwide
project to provide financial assistance to low income families to build
toilets said Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. He
was speaking at a ceremony at Puwakpitiya to disburse financial
assistance to needy families.
A survey has highlighted that there are 4,660 families without proper
toilet facilities in the Colombo district. The situation in the urban
areas is deplorable.
The Mahinda Chinthana too has underscored the importance of public
health as far as the community is concerned.
A total of Rs 258 million had been distributed among 2548 families to
build toilets. The remaining families will receive the financial
assistance with in the course of the year, the Minister said. Seetawaka
Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Jayantha Rohana, Civil Aviation Deputy
Minister Geethanjana Gunawardana, Additional Secretary to the Ministry
Mrs. Ranjanie Pillai, Media Secretary Rohana Lalith Liyanage and the
project cordinator Rupasena Kadanarachchi were also present.
