I will support President to gain victory - A.H.M Azwer

Politicians have to make sacrifices to support a good leadership for the betterment of the country and the community, said A.H.M. Azwer commenting on his recent decision to resign from his Parliamentary membership.

"Today the country need a brave leader who understands and provides opportunities to all communities. Such a leader is President Mahinda Rajapaksa. I will support the President's victory particularly through the support of the Muslim community," Azwer said.

Our forefathers who were pioneer politicians from the Muslim community have always supported the correct leadership, Azwer added.

Muslims have never betrayed the country - even during the colonial time or even before that, Azwer said.

"When the impeachment motion was initiated against President Ranasinghe Premadasa there were Muslim Members of Parliament like M.H.M. Ashroff and M.M. Zuhair who stood by the President and supported him.

It was to protect the leadership for the safety of the country," he added.

Azwer said when President Mahinda Rajapaksa came to power he brought confidence to the Muslim community. "Muslims in the North and the East were innocent farmers and during the terrorist threat they lost all means of earning. They were unable to cultivate and sell their harvest. DY
