Sir Garfield sobers – the star cricketer in his day and then
coach |
Sir Gary Sobers of the West Indies played his last Test match playing
in the 5th Test against England at Port of Spain, Trinidad. The last
appearance was on Friday 5th April 1974. It was a six-day Test and
sobers was on the losing side and England won the Test by just 26 runs.
However, on March 30th - the opening day, Sobers became the first
West Indian to take 100 wickets when he dismissed Dewnis Amiss for 44
caught by Kanhai. Besides Sobers, this game was also the last game for
Kanhai too who said 'Goodbye' to Test cricket.
Incidentally, when Vengsarkar had made 104, he became the third
batsman in the world to attain the 8,000 mark - the other two then were
Geoff Boycott of England (8,114) and Sir Garfield Sobers of West Indies
(8,032). His century is the fifth fastest in Tests in terms of number of
balls faced.
The second West Indian player to take 100 wickets was Lance Gibbs
when he clean bowled Geoff Boycott for 112 in England's second innings.
Boycott had scored 99 in the first innings, failing by just the run to
become the first Englishman to score a century in both innings against
the West Indies.
Kanhai scored a disappointing 2 and 7 but he did take a catch as
wicket keeper when Deryck Murray temporarily retired with a cut head.
