more important than ever, since it establishes our brand identity,"
Industry and Commerce Minister Rishard Bathiudeen told guests at the
opening of the CEMS Global exhibition on Thursday in Colombo. The
exhibition organised by CEMS global and the CEMS Sri Lanka arm is
clearly a key step in the right direction to advance our global apparel
status.
As the loss of GSP Plus from the European Union has greatly affected
our apparel sector, vigorous effots are being made to recover this
facility, he said. The country is supported by the EU Committee on
International Trade to regain the facility and the GSP Plus recovery
prospects are bright, he said.
Sri Lanka is set to achieve US $ 5 billion in exports as it recorded
$ 4.9 billion in 2014 an increase of 9.2 percent compared to a revenue
of $ 4.4 billion in 2013. When compared to 2012 apparel earnings, this
is a 24 percent increase, the Minister said.
Exhibitions of this nature are helpful in enhancing the status of the
industry. The exhibition which brings the world’s leading manufacturers
of the apparel supply chain including dyes, chemicals and yarn under one
roof in Colombo will have far reaching benefits to the apparel industry,
