UK Conservative calls to impose sanctions against Maldives
The UK Conservative Party on Thursday called on the international
community to impose sanctions against senior state officials of the
current regime citing the injustice being done towards former President
Mohamed Nasheed.
Chairman of the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission, Fiona
Bruce on Thursday released a press statement regarding the issue and
called on the international community to seriously consider imposing
sanctions against the top state officials of President Abdulla Yameen's
regime.
"Britain and the international community cannot afford to be silent
in the face of such gross injustice. Targeted sanctions against the
international assets of senior members of the regime, as well as a
boycott of tourist resorts owned by senior members of the regime or
their associates, should be seriously considered," Fiona said. She added
that "The Commonwealth should consider suspending the Maldives" while
doing everything they can to free Nasheed and restore Democracy in the
Maldives. |
