Prof. Stanley Wijesundera remembered

The annual Prof. Stanley Wijesundera memorial lecture was delivered
by Senior Professor of Molecular Life Sciences, Prof. Kamani Tennakoon
on May 21, at the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and
Biotechnology (IBMBB) of the University of Colombo.
Prof. Tennakoon's lecture titled "From the mitochondrial Eve to
contemporary Sri Lankan women: Glimpse into the genetic landscape," was
based on a recent study that analyzed the mitochondrial DNA of today's
men and women to derive scientific evidence to specify human origin and
the genetic links among ethnic, cultural and religious groups in Sri
Lanka.
Prof. Stanley Wijesundera, a well-known academic and a Professor of
Chemistry, served as the first Vice Chancellor of the University of
Colombo from 1979 to 1989 as well as Chairman of the Association of
Commonwealth Universities from 1983 to 1984. He was shot and killed
inside the Library Room in the College House, University of Colombo on
March 8, 1989. |
