SLMC ties up with UNP for Vanni and Batticaloa
by P. Krishnaswamy
The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) which has tied-up with the UNP
to run for the August 17 parliamentary elections, is contesting the
Vanni and Batticaloa electoral Districts on its party symbol 'Tree'
while contesting the Kandy, Digamadulla, Trincomalee, Kurunegala,
Puttlam, Gampaha and Kalutara Districts on the UNP's 'elephant' symbol,
party media director Dr. Hafeez said.
The National Front for Good Governance (NFFGG), an alliance of
political parties , headed by Engineer Abdhul Rahman has lately allied
with the SLMC to contest the polls and consequently two slots have been
given to it in the Batticaloa District where the SLMC is contesting on
its own party symbol. In the Trincomalee district where two slots have
been allotted to the SLMC by the UNP, on the basis of a MoU, one slot
has been given to the NFFGG, Hafeez said.
The party objective in running for the elections in alliance with the
UNP is further strengthening the people's mandate given at the last
presidential election, Hafeez said.
