Winner: Caring for the environment
Environment means everything around us, such as trees, rivers, lakes
and the air. These help us to obtain food, fresh water and air and also
give us a beautiful place to live in.
But, some people pollute the environment. Pollution of the
environment is chiefly due to heavy industrial and other human
activities. Such pollution renders the environment unsuitable and
dangerous for human habitation. Therefore, people should take remedial
measures to fight pollution.
It is the duty of each of us to keep our environment clean and free
from disease. A healthy environment is important. The atmosphere, land
and water should be free from pollution. Scientists and technicians
should pay attention and take steps to protect the environment. They
must ensure maximum safety and prevent radio-active materials from
polluting the environment.
If necessary, people should even change their lifestyle to care for
the environment and keep it clean and healthy.

Independence day
We won independence in 1948. Our forefathers had to fight for
independence. They had to suffer under British rule. They were not
allowed to practise their religion and were not allowed to engage in
farming and forced to work as labourers in tea estates and on the roads.
The day has been declared a national holiday in Sri Lanka. We
celebrated the 67th independence day on February 4. To win independence
a lot of people helped us including Anagarika Dharmapala, Henry Steele
Olcott and D.S. Senanayake.
D.S. Senanayake was the Prime Minister at the time. There were no
bloodshed in that war. We should honour those who won independence for
us. D. S. Senanayake was the father of independence.
Let us protect our independence.

The greatest gift
My nephew's name is Hakam. I love to cuddle him. His face is soft. He
is very chubby. He smiles at my sister. When he was born he was like a
strawberry cake. His lips are so soft. When he cries, he becomes like a
red rose.
At night I put him to sleep. His fingers are tiny and his nails are
small. My sister's and my nephew's birthdays fall on the same day. My
brother-in-law should celebrate the two birthdays on the same day.
My sister's best birthday gift was my nephew and my nephew's greatest
gift was my sister. I love him more than anything else.

I know that I am sad,
I know that I am mad.
But I have no one to tell,
That I am not glad.
I still feel that I am sad,
I feel that I had lost something
that I already had.
The smile on my face you know,
And now at last I feel glad.
