Chemical containers being used to store coconut oil
by Carol Aloysius
Agro
chemical barrels are being widely used to store cooking oil such as
coconut oil meant for sale in bulk form, the National Hospital's Poisons
Information Head, Dr. Waruna Gunathileke told the Sunday Observer.
"This is a very dangerous practice as chemical residues in the
containers mix with the oil," he warned. "Even after washing, these
barrels will contain residues of the toxic substances, as it is
difficult to wash and clean them thoroughly because of the narrow
openings", he added.
Consumer Affairs Authority Information Director Chandrika
Thilekerathne said the CAA had also detected several barrels containing
coconut and other cooking oils, in recent raids which had not been
properly cleaned before being used to store the oils. "In addition, at
least 30 to 40 percent of coconut oil has been adulterated with a
variety of different oils which could endanger human health. We have
filed action against most of the offenders", she said.
Asked if there was a solution to this lucrative practice, currently
thriving at the expense of human health, Dr. Gunathilake said, "The main
problem is that we lack a good disposable and re-cycle system.
This is an urgent need as most used agro chemical containers and
other toxic substances are now finding their way to unscrupulous traders
to be used to store oils for food consumption. Retailers should be
cautious in purchasing oil in bulk because it is cheaper, and should be
educated on the health impact of using these oils for human
consumptions." |
