CSC, lightering operator for Lakvijaya power plant
Ceylon Shipping Corporation (CSC) that operated shipping and
lightering services for Sri Lanka’s main coal driven power plant at
Norochcholai, Puttalam since its inception in 2010 has again secured the
contract with the new supplier of coal, Liberty Commodities Ltd., a
company based in the UK.

The contract was signed at CSC’ Head Office in Colombo by
Executive Director and Acting Chairman, CSC, Dr. Dan Malika
Gunasekera and Director, Liberty Commodities, Anuradha
Delgoda. |
The exercise of transporting coal to Lakvijaya Power Station has
always been a challenging affair for the CSC throughout these years.
However, it had successfully carried out this maritime adventure as the
country’s national sea carrier with commitment.
With the move of the Government of Sri Lanka in re-tendering the
supply of coal under the auspices of the Ministry of Power and Energy
through Lanka Coal Company Ltd., for the use of the Ceylon Electricity
Board; CSC was successful in meeting the CIF rates in a volatile charter
market.
Over 247,000 metric tonnes of coal will be supplied in September and
October as a part of the plant’s annual coal need of 2.2 million metric
tonnes.
The CSC has placed an order for two Panamax vessels from China to be
commissioned by January and May 2016. These vessels would enable the
smooth transportation of coal directly from the Port of Loading to the
outer anchorage of the Port of Puttalam and to the proposed coal power
plant in Sampur, Trincomalee.
The recently signed contract would ensure the arrival of the first
vessel this week carrying approximately 55,000 metric tonnes of coal
from South Africa.
