National Unity Govt to remain till 2020
Current understanding between the stakeholders of the National Unity
Government will prevail until 2020, President Maithripala Sirisena said.
“This is a solid government and it will not change until 2020. After
five years, the people of the country will be given another chance to
choose their government,” the President said during a political talk
show to mark the first year of his ‘defection’ from the Rajapaksa
government to be the Common Candidate of the opposition. The discussion,
hosted by political commentator Upul Shantha Sannasgala, was attended by
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and several other key stakeholders
of the national unity government.
“There is a misconception that nothing Is happening under the present
government. It is created by our political opponents. On January 08, we
embarked on a new journey and we have already introduced some of the
much needed political reforms to the country,” the President added.
When asked whether Nishshanka Senadipathi, owner of Avant Garde
private security firm, came to congratulate him on January 10, the
Sirisena said he could not remember every one who came to wish him after
the election.“If I can remember tens of thousands of people who came to
wish me after the election, my brain should be preserved in a special
museum,” he said. |
