St Peter’s College came out with a telling message and posted a
resounding win over traditional rivals St Joseph’s College in their 42nd
annual 50-over encounter for the Rev Fr Peter A Pillai Memorial
Challenge Trophy at the R Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo
yesterday.
It was a fitting sign-off for the Peterites who shut the mouths of
the Joes who only last week unsuccessfully attempted to disrupt the 82nd
big match at the P Sara Oval when the former was on the brink of victory
which was subsequently awarded to them.
Peterite batsman Hashan Wanasekera played a match-winning knock of
118 runs that set a record stand of 152 runs for any wicket for the
Bambalapitiya school erasing the previous best partnership of 143 runs
between Angelo Perera and Chathura Peiris in 2009. His partner was
Lakshina Rodrigo who made 61.
Unbeaten Wanasekera made some clean hitting as he smashed four sixes
and a dozen boundaries against a worthless Joes bowling attack.
Earlier, St Joseph’s made what would have appeared to be a
competitive 258-6 with openers Revon Kelly (87) and Kevin Corteling (35)
sharing a best first wicket partnership of 129.
But the Joes slumped to 143-3 in three as spinner Sadish Pathiranage
picked up Kelley and Samarasinghe in two successive overs. It was left
to Shevon Fonseka (34) and Jehan Daniel (33) to repair the damage.
Lanky left hander Charuka Ulandepitya smashed 22 runs with two
massive sixes and a four.
