Keeping to the tunes
'Musicmatters' Music Camp designed for children was held in Colombo
recently. The camp included group musical activities covering aspects of
rhythm and pitch, instrument-making sessions, ensemble-playing and
sessions on listening and appreciation.
Established in 2010, 'Musicmatters' has successfully introduced an
alternative model for Western music education in Sri Lanka. Since its
inception, it has earned a reputation for its enjoyable and practical
approach to music, in contrast with the traditional exam-oriented
instruction methods. 'Musicmatters' offers several programmes for
children of different age groups; from 4 to 5, 5 to 6 and children over
6 years.
The latter, being the core programme, is a comprehensive session in
which instrument tuition, ensemble work and theory lessons are designed
to complement each other in scope, while matching the students' skill
levels.
Having moved into a fully-fledged, purpose-built facility on Vauxhall
Street since the beginning of this year, 'Musicmatters' provides an
excellent environment in which students can attentively learn whilst
having fun, enjoying the benefits of music education that transcend all
other aspects of their lives.
