A boon for emerging artists
 Themes on nature, wildlife, music, theology, existentialism and
post-modernism were explored at the Nawa Kalakaruwo 2016 Art Exhibition
held recently at the J.D.A. Perera Galleries, University of Visual and
Performing Arts in Colombo. The exhibition showcased the talents of 34
young artists from all parts of Sri Lanka.
The artists included Shamen
S. Walker, Chris Benjamin, Renuka Dias, Rukman Jayasundare, Hashan
Cooray, Kavinda Silva, Dileepa Jeewantha, Chaminda Molligoda and Sampath
Vikum Bandara. The colour schemes were vibrant as well as muted, and
suited the thematic concerns of the artists.
Speaking at the preview of the exhibition, Chief Guest Deshabandu
Tilak de Zoysa, Chairman, Carsons Cumberbatch PLC said, “Nawa Kala
Karuwo 2016” is the 21st Exhibition organised particularly for the
benefit of emerging artists whose paintings and sculptures have been
carefully selected by an expert panel following the guidelines of the
Foundation, and can be recognised as a worthy contribution to society at
large.”
The Chairman of the George Keyt Foundation, Cedric de Silva speaking
at the event said, “Among the main objectives of the annual Nawa
Kalakaruwo Art Exhibition sponsored by the George Keyt Foundation is to
provide opportunities for young artists not only to display their
creative work to the general public, but also to provide them means to
develop their talents and even build livelihood earnings.”
