Moves for stabilised ceasefire by Ananth Palakidnar Intensive moves are under way to stabilise the current ceasefire between the Sri Lankan armed forces and the LTTE. Both Government and the diplomatic sources indicated the possibility of a continuation of the ceasefire beyond its current deadline. Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy, Investment promotion and Constitutional Affairs, Professor G. L. Peiris told the 'Sunday Observer' that the Government had been holding extensive talks with the visiting Norwegian delegation who are acting as facilitators, on the issue of a permanent ceasefire. "A stabilised ceasefire between the Government and the LTTE will lay a strong foundation for the peace process," Minister Peiris, who heads the special committee overseeing the peace process said. Meanwhile, Norwegian diplomatic sources in Colombo also expressed the possibility of a permanent ceasefire. "Our talks with the Sri Lanka leaders were extremely constructive and we are expecting to discuss the issue of a permanent ceasefire more elaborately , with all sides," sources told the 'Sunday Observer'. The three member delegation headed by the Deputy Norwegian Foreign Minister, Vidar Helgesen left Colombo on Saturday. |
