Varsity students poised for strike by Umangi de Mel University students are planning to launch an islandwide strike next week protesting over the non-payment of the Mahapola Scholarship grant. Students entitled to the monthly grant of Rs. 1,450 have not received it for long periods ranging from several months to three years. Ravindra Mudalige, convener of the Inter-University Students Federation, said that students in the Faculty of Science in the University of Ruhuna had not received the endowment for 13 months for the academic year 2001-2002, and those in the Engineering Faculty for four months. At the Jayawardenapura University, the medical students have not been paid for ten months and those in the Faculties of Management and Arts for six months for the 2000-2001 academic year. The students in the University of Rajarata have also not received their endowment for five months, while those in the Faculties of Science, Engineering, Medical, Dental, Veterinary, Agriculture have been deprived of it for seven months. The students in all the faculties of the University of Sabaragamuwa too have been denied it for ten months. This has been informed to the University Grants Commission and the Mahapola Front, and they have discussed it with the respective Vice Chancellors. But since there was no solution in sight, the students have decided to go on strike from next week," Mudalige said. |
