Foreign fishing pirates beware!

The Fisheries Ministry has set up a special unit to deal with unauthorised fishing by foreigners in Sri Lanka's territorial waters and in the process engage in the destruction of marine resources, a Lankapuvath report stated.

Illegal fishing by foreign fishermen in Sri Lanka's territorial waters has deprived the country of Rs. 2 billion income annually.

The setting up of a special unit is part of a series of measures that have been taken to preserve the country's sea belt and prevent it from being destroyed. Around 285 acres of sea belt territory is lost annually due to erosion caused by unlawful coastal activities.

The special unit has been provided with new equipment to locate via satellite any foreign fishing craft engaged in illegal fishing along Sri Lanka's sea belt and also to obtain information on local fishermen in distress.
