'President supports peace moves'

President's Media Division was inaugurated at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo on Thursday, January 10 with the participation of Director General Janadasa Peiris and Spokesman Harim Peiris.

Mr. Peiris told the media that with the advent of the new government after the December 5 general election, the need has a risen to have a President's Media Division to express the President's views on matters of national importance.

Chairing the first media conference, Mr. Peiris said that with the UNP/UNF government and the PA having their respective spokesmen, it was necessary to have a separate division to express views of the President to the nation through the mass media.

Commenting on the current peace process and the initiative taken by the UNP led government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe, Mr. Peiris said that the President was totally committed to peace and welcomed the move of the government to implement the peace process initiated by the PA government with the help of Norway and India.

He said that the December election had created an atmosphere for the concept of co-habitation to be put into practice and added that President as Head of State was determined to work together with the new government for the benefit of all and help solve the current ethnic conflict.

Mr. Peiris said that the stand taken by President Kumaratunga in respect of the three independent commissions implemented with the introduction of the 17th amendment to the Constitution.

Regarding the ceasefire now in operation the President's Spokesman said that though the road blocks and barriers had been removed, the President has stressed the need to strictly monitor the situation for the safety and security of all people, he added.
