15 in training for Colombo-Madras Regatta

Fifteen persons comprising of nine oarsmen and six oarswomen are training under Lakmal Wickremage in preparation for the annual Colombo-Madras Regatta to be hosted by Colombo Rowing Club and to be held on January 26 on the Beira Lake.

In 1999, Madras took the Regatta while Colombo won the main event, the Boat Race held in Madras.

The events to be held are fours, pairs and sculls for men and women.

The squad is as follows: - Men - Udesh Hettiarachchi, Kushal Abhayaratne, Asiri Abhayaratne, Usman Fatharally, Kushantha Jeerasinghe, Chanaka Thalpehewa, Diluk Aluwihare, Sanjeewa Perera, Heshan Henry, Women - Minoli Gunawardene, Mithila Gunawardene, Dilhara Abhayaratne, Umadhanthi Dias, Nafisah Aslam, Minoli Wijesinghe.

Opening regatta

The Opening regatta for this year will take place on January 19 on the Beria Lake. The event is conducted by the Colombo Rowing Club with the blessings from the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka.

All institutions and clubs are entitled to field teams for this event. The events to held are fours for H. M. S. Enterprise Trophy, pairs for Vanlangenberg Trophy, sculls for Gordon Armstrong Trophy and ladies novices pair.

Entries to be forwarded to the Colombo Rowing Club office by Tuesday January 15. Individual names to be given for H. M. S. Enterprise Trophy early.
