Sri Lanka needs Rs. one million to play in Thomas and Uber Cup tourneys

The Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) require at least Rs. 10 lakhs to play in the preliminary rounds of both the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup contests to be staged in Eindhoven, Netherlands from February 17 to 24.

The President of the SLBA Dr. A. R. L. Wijesekera, told the Sunday Observer that the air fare alone per person will cost Rs. 60,000 while the accommodation for the duration of the event for the entire team will cost around US Dollars 2000. The Sri Lanka team will comprise 13 persons (five men's players, five women's players, manager, assistant manager and coach).

Dr. Wijesekera further said that the SLBA had earlier decided to play their preliminary rounds in Melbourne, Australia, but as countries like Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Japan too were figuring in Melbourne, the SLBA decided to play in the Netherlands.

Sri Lanka are in Group 'F' for the Thomas Cup with Finland (who are seeded), Bulgaria, Ukraine and Norway, while in the Uber Cup, Sri Lanka, are in Group 'E' together with Bulgaria (who are seeded), Hungary, Belarus and Iceland.

The trials are now going on and conclude tomorrow (Monday) and the final team for Netherlands is to be submitted to the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Johnston Fernando, on Tuesday for approval.

Meanwhile, the Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) Development Officer, Mohan Subramaniam from Malaysia, will conduct a coaching and training program for senior coaches (comprising 20) at the Sports Ministry from today (Sunday) and it concludes on January 20. This is being co-ordinated by Ajith Wijeyasinghe, Chairman of SLBA's Coaching and Promotion Committee.
