Jerome Jayaratne appointed Project Officer by ICC

by PELHAM JURIANSZ

Jerome Jayaratne, the former Thomian fast bowler and one time Sri Lankan poolist, who was appointed as the Manager, Coaching and Development of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) has got a prestigious appointment as the "Project Officer" for Cricket Development by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Jerome will be based in London and was one of two appointees. The selection was made when the ICC asked for applications and Jerome applied through the CEO of the BCCSL Anura Tennekoon.

This appointment is the first of its kind and was initiated by Malcolm Speed the CEO of the ICC.

Jerome is one of the first two applicants chosen by the ICC from a wide range of applicants from all over the world.

Jayaratne's appointment will be from January 28 for a period of six months.

Over this period of time, he will be associated with Andrew Eade, ICC's Global Development Manager for Cricket, and will receive training under the ICC Development Programs, principally in the domains of coaching education, promotion and marketing of cricket, research, resource development, tournaments and special projects.

He will be part of a team in creating an ICC Bench Marking System whereby individual member countries may apply to have their coaching education programs accredited internationally.

Creating a syllabus and resources for the ICC "Cricket for Life" coaching education course will be another feature during this stint.

This course is fully financed by the International Cricket Council and Jerome is grateful, firstly, to the former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL), Thilanga Sumathipala and Duleep Mendis, the Director Coaching and Development of the Board who initially gave him the appointment as the Manager, Coaching and Development.

Jayaratne also thanks Anura Tennekoon, the CEO of the BCCSL and Bandula Warnapura, the Director Cricket Operations who have helped him in his day to day affairs and have agreed to release him for the next six months beginning on January 28.

Jerome is also grateful to Vijaya Malalasekera, the Chairman of the Interim Committee and the other members who have supported him for the past year since he took over as the Manager, Coaching and Development.

Over the past year, Jayaratne has developed the infrastructure of cricket in Sri Lanka. His job has been to start at the grassroot level and scout around for young talent especially in the outstations. He has been helping the Board in the reconstruction of their coaching program.

Jerome, who was the Sports Development Manager of S. Thomas College, Mount Lavinia for 4 years, and was in charge of 16 sports there, has immense plans for reconstructing the coaching aspects of the Cricket Board, and said that this exposure to the English conditions would enhance his cricketing knowledge in the aspect of coaching.
