Police report before Parliament on Jan. 22

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

Inspector General of Police Lucky Kodituwakku has nominated Senior DIG Crimes, H.M.G.B. Kotakadeniya, with the task of compiling a report on election violence. The "Sunday Observer" learns that the report is expected to be handed over to parliament by the IGP on Tuesday Jan 22.

The report is a sequel to a complaint made by Opposition leader, Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, to prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in respect of violence perpetrated on People's Alliance (PA) supporters by certain United National Front (UNF) supporters before and after the general election of December 5, 2000. It is learnt that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has called for a report in this connection from the IGP.

A senior police official said that the report has already been compiled on crime statistics submitted by the respective DIGs in charge of police ranges on a directive from Senior DIG Kotakadeniya.

Meanwhile, police sources said that some People's Alliance (PA) supporters alleged to have been harassed by United National Front (UNF) supporters after the polls had directly complained to the PA hierarchy instead of lodging complaints at their respective police stations. However, complaints recorded at police stations have been investigated and action filed in courts against positive cases.
