Strengthening North-South Varsity rapport

by FRANCES BULATHSINGHALA

The Inter-University Student Federation has invited the student union of Jaffna to join it since it is linked to all universities in the country except the universities of Jaffna and Batticaloa. Ravindra Mudalige, convener of the Inter-University Student Federation, said that the invitation was extended after considering the rapport that could be created between university youth of the North-East and other areas of the country.

Meanwhile, Jaffna university student union sources told the 'Sunday Observer' that a decision would be taken this week in favour of the move to join the federation following a suggestion by the Jaffna student union representatives at an inter-religious peace conference held in Trincomalee, end of last year.

Mudalige who in an interview with the 'Sunday Observer' said that the federation would support peace moves initiated by the UNP if there was 'transparency' added that its invitation to the Jaffna University student union was one of brotherhood and should not be misinterpreted as a politically motivated one. Although the IUSF is widely known to be influenced by the ideologies of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, the convener of the IUSF said that in this instance it was not so.

"The invitation for the Jaffna university union to join the federation was to rectify a lapse on its part", Mudalige said.
