Import of spuds hit local farmers by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya The farmers in the major potato and vegetable cultivating district of Nuwara Eliya are once again in a quandary, over the resumption of the import of potatoes by the new government. The potato farmers complain that due to the import of spuds even on the earlier 'letter of credits' is bound to affect them. The previous PA government totally banned the import of potatoes and gave a guaranteed price of Rs. 40 per kilo to the local cultivators after protracted agitations and protests by them. The potato cultivators have now begun to harvest their crops and with the ban on the import of potatoes off the cultivators are in a dilemma whether they would get a reasonable price for their produce. |
