Ericsson GPRS supplier for Dialog

Ericsson has been selected as the supplier of General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) to Dialog GSM.

Ericsson Sri Lanka's Managing Director Bimal Dayal said: "This is a major step towards 3G technology which will revolutionise mobile and broadband Internet communications."

Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, CEO of Dialog GSM said: "We are proud to have been able to place Sri Lanka on the world map of mobile communications with the introduction of GPRS ahead of our counterparts in South Asia. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Ericsson, leading up to the introduction of Third Generation Technologies in time to come."

GPRS provides cost efficient Internet Protocol (IP) communication between mobile devices and public or private data networks such as Internet or Intranet service hosts. With GPRS, packet switching data transmission is added to traditional circuit switching transport on a GSM network.

Data is chunks of information instead of a steady stream such as voice. This allows a GPRS user to remain 'virtually' connected to the server, using airtime only when data is actually being sent, allowing quick and easy access to services, such as immediate delivery of e-mail, web surfing and access to corporate Local Area Networks.

GPRS helps operators get more out of their networks and makes extremely efficient use of scarce radio resources and allows for 'virtual' connections.

Ericsson has 59 commercial agreements for GPRS and has already delivered over 50 standard compatible GPRS solutions to leading operators in Europe, Asia Pacific and the Americas. The Ericsson GPRS solution is 'future-proofed' for third generation (3G) systems and is fully compatible with the GPRS specifications approved at SMG 31 (Special Mobile Group within ETSI standardisation organisation).
