Importance of police-public rapport stressed by kapila somaratne is the responsibility of the police to maintain law and order of the country and curb the rising tide of crime. The police should be honest, impartial and well disciplined and they should build a close rapport with the citizens to arrest criminal activities in their respective divisions without being pawns in the hands of unscrupulous elements in the conduct of their duty. The police should also be well disposed towards the public when their assistance is sought. These observations were made by the new Deputy Inspector General of Police (Western Province South) Sirisena Herath when he briefed the OICs of Panadura, Bandaragama, Horana, Anguruwatota, Ingiriya, Kehelwatte, Wadduwa and Morontuduwa police stations at the Panadura Police Station on his first official visit to Panadura and Kalutara police divisions. It was the bounden duty of the police to conduct impartial investigations into complaints made by the public without fear or favour and they should not abuse their power, DIG Herath said. It was also their duty to apprehend offenders and produce them before the courts. The image of the police had been tarnished to a great extent due to political interference and other problems in the past. Therefore, every effort should be made to restore its image, respect and dignity, he said. Referring to the Panadura police division the DIG said there was no increase in the rate of crimes in the area and paid a tribute to police officers involved in anti-crime activities. |
