by LAL GUNESEKERA

The Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) has given a sum of Rs. 50,000 to the Galle RFU to conduct its Ruhunu 7's which get under way yesterday (Saturday) in Galle. A similar amount was also given to conduct the Sabaragamuwa 7's too.

The President of the SLRFU, Captain Harsha Mayadunne, told the Sunday Observer that the council also decided to appoint Priyantha Ekanayake (a former Kandy Sports Club and Sri Lanka captain) as the co-ordinator between the SLRFU and the International Rugby Board (IRB).

The national 7's pool is to be pruned down to 18 players soon after the Club 7's next week, and even the national (15-a-side) pool too is to be pruned down to 30 players this month come under Asanga Seneviratne and SSP Nimal Lewke respectively.

Jason Withford the Physical and Strength Trainer from the Australian RFU will be in Sri Lanka again for two weeks from Friday (February 8) to pick talent at the Club 7's and also spot the "weak points" of the poolists. He may even assist with the 15-a-side pool too with SSP Lewke.

Isipatana MV have also got the approval from the SLRFU Council to conduct an Under-19 International Tournament this year comprising several school sides from overseas to celebrate their Golden Jubilee. The dates have not yet been finalised.
