Grenade attack: 5 killed, 21 hurt

Police are on the trail of a 'service' deserter who had allegedly flung a grenade at a group of people at a political meeting of the United National Front at Vimalasara Gunnalankkara Road, Kohuwela on Friday. Five people including a woman died after being admitted to the Colombo South Hospital with 21 others injured, a police spokesman told the Sunday Observer.

The motive behind the grenade attack was attributed to a quarrel the suspect has had with a group of persons over a woman. The injured had gathered near the stage to witness a musical show after the meeting, police said.

On an earlier occasion too, the suspect was in remand prison over quarrels he has had with the woman's party, police said.

OIC Kohuwela police, Inspector B.S. Tissera, when contacted said that the organisers had not informed the police about the political meeting or the musical show. Meanwhile, the police is on the look out for the suspect in connection with other offences as well.
