Call to implement 17th Amendment

by S. SELVAKUMAR

The Association of Election Professionals of Sri Lanka has requested the government to implement the 17th Amendment to the Constitution without delay, especially the setting up of the independent Election Commission.

The Association formed recently by past and present officers of the Elections Department in a bid to ensure free and fair elections in the future, is temporarily based in Kirulapone.

A spokesman for the Association said they would offer the knowledge, experience and expertise of the members to assist in the endeavour to change the unhealthy trend of election-related violence, prevalent in the country since 1977. "We will also offer our services to foreign governments and organisations in all matters relating to the conduct of elections," he added.

The Association also urged that men and women who are recognised in society as persons of integrity and eminence, and who would not bow to any kind of pressure, political or otherwise, be selected to serve in the commission.
