HNB offers electricity to national grid

by S. Selvakumar

Though it is customary for private sector firms engaged in heavy construction work to draw the required electrical energy fro m the national grid, the Hatton National Bank now engaged in building its 23-storey highrise head office at Darley Road, has installed four state-of-the art power generators for its own use and is also willing to supply the extra energy to the national grid.

This was revealed by Mr. M.U. de Silva, Senior Deputy General Manager of HNB, at a Colombo press conference. Three caterpillar generators of 1500 KV capacity and one of 250 KV capacity, have already been energised and the bank has advised the Ceylon Electricity Board that it could be serviced with the surplus power for the next three months when the highrise is completed. De Silva said that the work on the new highrise commenced in early 1999.

The HNB has responded to the government's bid to supply energy and also revealed that on completion of the new head office, the HNB would not draw any more power from the national grid for a period of two years and, if necessary, could consider further supplies to the national grid even after the completion of its head office.

The construction of the building has been undertaken by a BoI approved flagship company called Sithma Development (Pvt) Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of the HNB.

Once completed, this company will own the new head office and the HNB will be a tenant. The flagship project enjoys a 15 year tax holiday with exemption from import duties on specific project related material as approved by the BoI.

This building will be the first in Sri Lanka and perhaps in this region to employ a fully integrated and exhaustive building management system to dynamically control and equally advanced variable air volume system for the air-conditioning. A computer controller building management system will integrate the environment control, elevator management, fire management and lighting control.

A part of level 4 to 9 will be utilised for parking vehicles. The total floor area will be 430,000 sq.ft. and the building will be ready for occupation in June this year.
