New waste management project at national zoo

by VIMUKTHI FERNANDO

A new waste management project was launched at the National Zoological Gardens, Dehiwala recently, under its accelerated renovation and development programme. Based on waste recycling, it will enable the zoo to save a considerable amount of money and conserve energy as well.

The project requires three bio-gas digester units, each 30 feet in depth and 15 feet in diameter. Each of these units would cost approximately Rs. 375,000. At present, about 4 tractor loads of waste are removed from the zoo to the municipal dumping grounds on a normal day, at a costs about Rs. 700.

Once the new system is implemented, the bio-gas will be used in the zoo's kitchen and the excess will be used for lighting and cooking at 12 officers' quarters. The flurry (residue) will be used as fertilizer at the zoo farm at Gonapola, Horana.

The waste disposal project in the zoo is assisted by the Ministry of Environment, CEA, NERD and SMED (Small and Medium Enterprise Developers). Other programs under the accelerated renovation and development programme include a breeding program and re-introducing some exotic animals said Brigadier H. A. N. T. Perera, Director of the Zoo.

A pair of orang-utans from Indonesia, a pair of camels from Russia and a pair of king-cobras are due in the zoo shortly. Under the breeding program, the import of a female Siamang gibbon, two female Halmaherra parrots and a female Reticulated python have been finalised.

The zoo has already found a male cheetah and a pair of rhinoceros from overseas zoos. However, the deeds for these animals and exotic birds are yet to be finalised.
