Jam, cordials to be made in Jaffna again The Jaffna food processing industry is expected to be given a kickstart in 2002 with the opening of a factory in Chunnakam. This is the first factory to be re-opened in Jaffna, managed by the Chunnakam MPCS, with technical assistance from Action Contre La Faim (ACF). Its aim is to provide a market for local farmers and act as a catalyst for similar ventures, a spokesman of the Resettlement and Rehabilitation Authority of the North (RRAN) told Lankapuvath." Jaffna is well known for its fruits, but the ethnic conflict and economic "enclave' position of the peninsula has seriously affected the farmers and associated industries to market their goods, he said.A warehouse in Chunnakam has been converted to a factory, complete with boiler, autoclave, and other essential equipment to produce up to 500 jars of jam a day. A water softener is also being installed to overcome the problems of hard water experienced in the peninsula. With the machinery in place, Chunnakam MPCS is now developing a supply and marketing network to ensure satisfaction for both producer and consumer. The factory plans to produce all types of preserves including jams, pickles, chutneys and cordials using local fruits, and it is hope that farmers would be able to sell some of their produce direct at the factory gate, in addition, a staff of 12 are currently employed and undergoing training on production duties. Initial trial production runs were started in January, with full production of strawberry flavoured jam, lime pickle and lime cordial expected in the next two months. The project has been partly financed by the Chunnakam MPCS and Action Contre La Faim (ACF) contributions, supported by the French Embassy in Colombo and facilitated by RRAN, he said. |
