First industrial promotional drive in Jaffna

The government will undertake its first industrial promotional drive in the Jaffna peninsula this week after its official ceasefire agreement with the LTTE.

On the instructions of Prime Mimister Ranil Wickramasinghe, a team of over 25 key persons in the commercial sector, led by the Minister of Industries Rohitha Bogollagama, will leave for Jaffna on Tuesday (12). Their task will be to establish goodwill and industrial relationships with Tamil industrialists, manufacturers and producers in the peninsula, government sources told the Sunday Observer.

Industries Minister Rohita Bogollagama is to have talks with Jaffna-based industrialists and owners of business enterprises about problems concerning their business operations to find out solutions to promote trade and economic development in the peninsula. The sources said that the ministry will also focus on supplying building materials to the North. Initial steps would be taken for setting up of regional offices that will come under the purview of the Ministry of Industries.

To join Minister Bogollagama during his visit are Senior Officials of the North East Rehabilitation Authority , Secretary to the Ministry of Industies Dr. U. Vidanapthirana, Advisor on Regional Industrialization Prof. Lakshman Watawala, Chairmen of the Industrial Development Board, the Export Development Board, the National Paper Corporation, The People's Bank, The Sampath Bank and the Director of Bank of Ceylon.

The heads of private Companies such as the Tokyo Cement, Candy Garments, Aitken Spence, ODEL, Lanka Ceramics, David Peiris and Companies, Dialog GSM, Eagle Insurance and the Phoenix group.
