International
backing for economic progress
by CHAMIKARA WEERASINGHE The International community has shown a keen interest to assist the country to achieve its economic goals backed by Norway, the OPEC Fund, Japan, the World Food Programme, the Asian Development Bank, the Netherlands and Germany. This was revealed by Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy, Investment Promotion and Constitutional Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris. A team of diplomats from the Norwegian government recently commended the UNF regime in its bid to introduce independent commissions for the Judiciary, Mass Media, the Elections Department and the Police Department. This was disclosed at a discussion held recently between the UNF government and the Norwegian diplomats at the Finance Ministry. The Deputy Minister of Development Corporation, Norway, Olav Kjorven, pledged that Norway would assist in development programmes of both the public and private sector for which US dollar 11 million had been allocated. The NORFUND will also assist commercial projects. The Norwegian Export Council, The Confederation of Business Industry and NORAD will jointly assist to achieve the economic goals of the Sri Lankan government. Prof. G.L. Peiris said that the OPEC Fund, the governments of the Netherlands and Germany were seriously considering investing in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the Japanese Ambassador had pledged that Japan would considerably enhance its volume of aid to the Sri Lankan government. The World Food Programme has agreed to grant Rs. 1,600 million to rehabilitate people displaced in the war-torn areas. The Asian Development Bank president, Todao Chino, who signed the US dollar 210 million Poverty Deduction Partnership Agreement with Sri Lanka for the year 2002, at the Finance Ministry last week, said that the bank would fully support Sri Lanka in its economic development programmes. |
