Backing
for peace process pledged
The President of the European Parliament, Pat Cox, met the Sri Lankan Special Representative on the peace process, Mr. Milinda Moragoda on March 12 and assured him the European Parliament's active interest in the peace process, and of the European Union's support and solidarity. Following the meeting in Strasbourg, Pat Cox said: "The ongoing the de-commissioning of weapons in Sri Lanka is a very positive and encouraging developments in the peace process. We must be prepared to assist in a positive way and draw upon the lessons we have learnt from the peace process in Northern Ireland, possibly even including the development of community-based funding mechanisms". On the Initiative of John Cushnahan MEP, the former Chief Electoral
Observer of the EU to Sri Lanka, the European Parliament also unanimously
passed a resolution giving political support to the Sri Lanka peace
process and calling on the international community to provide substantial
funding to underwrite it. |
