'Sisusaviya'
schols for needy students
by Deepal Warnakulasuriya A new scholarship scheme, "Sisusaviya" for the G.C.E. O/Level and A/Level students will be introduced by the Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). These scholarships will be granted to about 48,000 needy students between grade 10 - 13 under the Secondary Education Modernization project. Minister of Education Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku said that "Sisusaviya" would greatly help reduce school dropouts from the formal education system by providing financial assistance for needy students to purse higher studies. Under this scheme, selected students will receive a monthly bursary of Rs. 500 for 10 months a year. Priority will be given for students in remote and difficult areas who have proved their worth in academic and extra curricular activities in school. Pilot projects in this regard will be inaugurated in Hambantota, Monaragala, Trincomalee and Anuradhapura districts, the Minister added. He said that financial assistance from the ADB will be provided for five years during the project period. A trust fund will be set up to maintain the scholarships with the assistance of the foreign and local donors. A quality science education for the Senior Secondary level students has also been planned under the scheme and 100 schools will be upgraded with full curriculum status. Another significant aspect is that 800 Computer Learning Centres and
2300 Multi-media Centres will also be established in selected schools
while upgrading the school curriculum from grades 10-13. |
